Seminars for All Nurses

Backstage in the Legal Arena:
Lessons Learned from a Decade of Legal Nurse Consulting

The medicolegal world infiltrates our everyday clinical practices, often without our awareness. As an active clinician who is also a Legal Nurse Consultant and expert witness, Deborah will describe some of the lessons learned which have affected her clinical practice.

She will share case histories which illustrate strengths and weaknesses of nursing practice, ranging from individual activities up through administrative actions. Participants will have the opportunity to compare their own practices with real medicolegal cases and to improve their individual and team strategies for pro-active focus.

The seminar's case-based discussion will focus on

  • Our litigious society and the healthcare business
  • Protecting our professional practice
  • What is the Standard of Care?
  • What is the role of a Legal Nurse Consultant?
  • How the medical record is used in a lawsuit
  • Documentation strategies
  • Front-line risk management strategies for nurses and managers
  • Should you carry your own professional liability insurance?
  • Patient Privacy and HIPAA
  • Giving effective depositions (and surviving)
  • Surviving being named in a lawsuit
  • Critical thinking strategies for individuals and teams

This workshop is more than just another "legalities lecture." You'll find that these lessons will enrich your ability to provide safe and effective care and to protect yourself from lawsuits.

Deborah is an active member of The American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants. During the past decade, she has consulted and testified in both plaintiff and defense cases. She has written two medical-legal chapters, and she has served as a guest editor for Nursing Clinics of North America. She has also served as an Associate Editor of both editions of Legal Nurse Consulting Principles and Practice, published by the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants.

How to Get Started in Legal Nurse Consulting

At the end of the seminar day, Deborah will present an optional non-credit hour for interested participants about the challenges of this branch of professional nursing. This is a casual nuts-and-bolts discussion with plenty of time for your questions.

Polishing Your Competence and Confidence for Clinical Crises

Do you dread the thought of a "code" or other clinical crisis? The rarity of emergency events may diminish readiness by denial and reduced recognition of critical events as well as lack of team preparation.

Individual competence and confidence are essential elements which can be developed and nurtured. This workshop focuses on strategies aimed at increasing personal and professional capabilities in crisis situations.

Although this is a high-energy day, it is designed to be a gentle and non-threatening environment for nurses to…
…review their skill and preparedness levels
…learn strategies and techniques for coping with crises
…solidify knowledge about nursing actions in selected crises
…prepare to meet future crises with confidence and competence

Real cases from Deborah's extensive clinical experience provide the framework for the seminar. Participants are encouraged to bring their own cases to discuss!

Discussions will include:
Elements of preparedness
Facing crises effectively
Development of personal confidence
Crisis management: from the airlines to healthcare
Effective documentation in a crisis
Risk management at the bedside
What all nurses need to know about ACLS (even if you're not ACLS- certified)

Intensive Care for Nurses: How to Survive and Thrive

How many care plans have you written for your patients? Probably thousands.
And how many care plans have you written for yourself? Probably none.

Most of us have spent our careers caring for others, including our patients and our families, yet we have paid very little attention to our own needs. This has created professional fatigue, compassion exhaustion, burnout, and perhaps even a contribution to the nursing shortage.

This workshop invites participants to create their own "intensive care units" within their lives. These virtual intensive care units are places of the mind created by each nurse as sanctuaries and strategies designed to improve quality of life in both professional and personal worlds. Taking care of ourselves allows us to maintain our highest possible energy levels, to be able to develop the strength to provide the best possible care for patients, to provide for our family's needs, and to create the lives that we have dreamed about.

You'll learn to develop written action plans for achieving your dreams and goals. We'll discuss these topics, which are general springboards to success:
Unlocking your natural empowerment, even if you're feeling burned out.
Taming the tiger of stress
Secrets of resilience when the @#$% hits the fan
De-fusing difficult people, including yourself
Making your career bloom in the traditional garden of nursing
Shifting your nursing skills to a new arena
Attracting success, creativity, and abundance in all dimensions of life

You'll create strategies to get started with new energy and motivation to define your goals, meet them, and keep on growing!
